Description
Three color slides. The Dade Folk Arts Survey was conducted in 1986 by folklorists Tina Bucuvalas, Nancy Nusz and Laurie Sommers in order to identify folk arts and folk artists for the special folklife area at the 34th Annual Florida Folk Festival. The traditions are mainly Haitian, Jamaican, Mexican, Bahamian, Cuban and Jewish and cover a wide range of skills and art forms.

143 color slides. Images of commercial fisherman Noles trapping, transporting, and cleaning catfish for sale at market. The boat he used was built by Myron Warr. A few slides are duplicates. For an interview with Noles, see S 1714, Box 3, tapes 30-32. In winter 1985, the Bureau joined with two folklorists to conduct a folk arts survey of the St. Johns River basin in northeastern Florida. The St. Johns River is the largest and most used river in Florida, supporting much river commerce as well as a modest amount of commercial fishing. Folklorists Mary Anne McDonald and Kathleen Figgen conducted the survey from January through March 1985 under the direction of Folklife Coordinator Blanton Owen and Bureau Chief Ormond Loomis. Documentation compiled in the survey was used to prepare and present the 'St. Johns River Basin Folklife Area' at the 1985 Florida Folk Festival.

Six black and white print, and one negative. Images of Fletcher and Peggy Hodges, curators at the Stephen Foster Museum in Pittsburg, at the Florida Folk Festival. Fletcher began collecting Foster memorabilia in 1931, with Josiah Kirby Lilly. In 1937, he donated those materials to the University of Pennsylvania, and Hodges became the collection's curator. He also assisted in the creation of the Stephen Foster Memorial in White Springs. He retired in 1982. His wife Peggy was also a children's author and teller of folktales.

The Florida Folk Arts Survey was conducted in 1987 by folklorists Tina Bucuvalis, Steve Fragos, Merri Belland, and Barbara Seitz as preliminary research for a joint folk art between the Florida Folklife Program and the Florida Museum of History. The field researchers focused on those areas previously overlooked by FFP staff. The research focused on identifying folk artists and locating appropriate exhibit objects.

Four color slides. Images of Semigran's hand woven Jewish prayer shawls. Jewish tradition is to wear fringes on the corners of four-cornered garments. Since this is no longer a commonly worn type of garment, it is customary to wear a Tallit, a prayer shawl, during morning services. A Tallit can be made from any material and can be any color. (Copied onto audio cassette C81-11; reel T81-13B) A radio show -- jointly produced by WJCT and the FFP -- tracing the origins and evolution of blues music centering on Florida musicians. Created by using earlier FFP recordings. Includes recordings of prisoners singing the blues together while laboring and performances of "Baby Please Don't Go" and "I'm a Stranger Here" by Blind Johnny Brown of St. Petersburg, Florida. Includes commentary by Florida folklorists and Florida blues musicians.

Included are interviews with folklorists, park employees, musicians, artisans, and park attendees, as well examples of the folklife on display at the Festival.
