Description

One audio cassette. This tape served as accompanying audio to a slide-tape presentation created by the Florida Folklife Program about shape note singing and The Sacred Harp. The presentation features Albritton and shape note singers at Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church in Old Chicora recorded in 1978. Old Chicora is a ghost town on the borderline of Polk and Hillsborough counties, south of the present day towns of Lithia and Mulberry.

The source material for this presentation can be found on audiotapes T78-348, T78-349 and T78-350. C80-26, reproduced in its entirety beginning at 1:13, served as the master tape used in live slide-tape presentations.

Valada was the author of Poetically Just us. She and Tina Flewellyn explained their concept of stoetry -- poetic stories.

One audio cassette. Albritton was from Lithia, Florida. This session was begun on C94-54. All songs derive from either the BF White Sacred Harp book (Cooper Revision) or the original Sacred harp book (Denson Revision). Yao played the Chinese zither -- the zheng. The Zheng is a Chinese zither, dating back to the third century BC. Yao was born in Shanghai to a musical family. In 1990 she moved to Florida, and worked with the Florida Folklife Program's apprenticeship program. Her performance concludes on C94-56.

He discusses his life and his shape note singing -- the conclusion of his program from C94-57. Chancey was a storyteller from Bartow.

One audio cassette tape. Stone served as emcee. Ronnie Dale Lee, a member of the Sacred Harp/shape note singing Lee family, discusses wood crafts such as bread bowls, walking sticks and toy boats made out of tupelo. He also discusses his family from Hoboken, GA, shaped note singing and railroading.

One audio cassette tape. Stone served as emcee. The Rodenberry Family (Mrs. Bernice Roddenberry and daughters: Betty Owens, Doris Lloyd, Katherine Lett, Debbie Todd, Judy Drury, Latrell McDowell and Sheila Carter) perform the several Sacred Harp/shape note pieces. They also discuss gator hunting and hollering, whippings and making items out of palmetto. Attached to index sheets is a copy of a shape note singing handout including "Amazing Grace" and "Love Divine".
