Folder Description
Letter, July 28, 1839, Richard K. Call, Tallahassee, to President Martin Van Buren, 8 pp., describing at length conditions in Florida and military campaigns against the Seminole Indians and making suggestions for a better system of defense against the Indians: ''The distress and suffering, of the frantic inhabitants of Florida, and the danger and distruction to which they are continually exposed, has induced me to send a deputation from among our most intelligent and respectable citizens, to confer with, and to represent to your excellency the true condition of this Territory, in the hope that measures may be adopted to avert in future the evils and perils to which we have been so long exposed. . . They are acquainted with the situation of the country and the character of the enemy, and will be able to give you much valuable information. I hope your excellency will pardon the liberty I have taken in presenting them to you for this purpose, as well as for the suggestions and remarks I shall venture to make . . .''
