One reel to reel tape. (Copied onto C86-128.) Recording of the West Virginia Boys at a benefit for the Muscular Dystrophy association at the Ives Optimist Club. The four-piece string band consisted of leader William Duncan (mandolin/vocals), Billy Duncan, Jr (guitar, vocals), Jim Coombs (bass, vocals),and Stuart Light (banjo, vocals). They played old-style Bill Monroe tunes (Duncan played with Monroe in the 1950s). Duncan was originally from West Virginia, and moved to South Florida in 1980. The Dade Folk Arts Survey was conducted in 1986 by folklorists Tina Bucuvalas, Nancy Nusz and Laurie Sommers in order to identify folk arts and folk artists for the special folklife area at the 34th Annual Florida Folk Festival. The traditions are mainly Haitian, Jamaican, Mexican, Bahamian, Cuban and Jewish and cover a wide range of skills and art forms.
