Spesard L. Holland
U.S. Senator Spessard Lindsey Holland- a man of courage, stubbornness and integrity.
Courage... of the kind that earned him the Distinguished Service Cross in World War I....
that twice stopped lynch mobs at the jail door.... that enabled him to stand queitly on the floor of the Florida Senate while bystanders quelled a fellow legislator who had struck Holland with his cane, and threatened to kill him.
Stubbornness... of the kind that kept him working for 13 years and finally succeeding- to get through Congress a Constitutional amendment to outlaw the poll tax... that made him a leader in preserving the right to conduct a filibuster, the device that gives the minority a loud enough voice to be heard in the Senate.
Integrity... of the kind that keeps him true to his principles, regardless of how the tides of fickle publix favor may run... that brings him home after 24 years in Washington no wealthier than the day he was elected.
In more than 50 years of public service. Spessard Holland has been showered with almost every honor a man could receive, from his medal for bravery as an aerial observer over the German lines in 1918, to eight honorary college degrees. Yet he still is modest, unassuming, quick to give credit to others.
Tampa Tribue Editor James A. Clendinen, presenting a plaque from the Florida Press Association, summed it all up by saying: "This a remarkable man we honor here."
This is U.S. Senartor Spessard L. Holland- a man of courage, stubbornness and integrity- a man as loved by his homefold today as when he returned a hero from war.
