Mrs. Karen Lambert, Executive Secretary
"Mental Illness Is America's Number One Health Problem" - American Medical Association
TWENTY MILLION PEOPLE IN THE U.S. ARE CONDEMNED TO SOME FORM OF MENTAL ILLNESS!
In 1953 this Bell was cast from the shackles and chains removed from patients in mental institutions. This bell has become a symbol a hope for the mentally ill.
A BOLD NEW APPROACH
EDUCATION- RESEARCH- IMPROVED SERVICES
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN MENTAL HOSPITALS IS DECLINING.
This progress has been made through:
1) Changed attitudes reducing fear and prejudice;
2) Significant increase in the contributions of time and money by individuals in local communities across the United States;
3) New facilities to treat patients in their home communitiesl
4_ New drugs and improved care.
OUR APPRECIATION TO THE FOLLOWING
Governor Claude R. Kirk, Jr., for Proclamation; The Hon. Tom Adams, Honorary Chairman; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Moor, Cochairmen, Patron Committee;
All Members of our Board and the many volunteers who work constantly in this fight against mental illness
Jack Anderson, Chairman of the Board.
SOME OF OUR LOCAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS
With the cooperation of concerned citizens the following progressive steps have been taken:
1) Establishment of LEON COUNTY MENTAL HEALTH CLINIC to provide care not previously available in our community.
Evidence of need for and progress of this institution: 1955- Number of patients, 212; hours treatment, 1,895.
1968- Number of patients, 1,072; hours treatment, 4,828.
The Clinic is to move into larger quarters this year to offer even greater services to our community.
2) The new addition to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital will have a PSYCHIATRIC WING, not previously available.
3) Mental ill patients are now accepted at T.M.H. rather than sent to the county jail which was previously the only solution.
