ERA will provide citizens of all 50 states with a constitutional guarantee of Legal Quality.
ERA will guarantee fair treatment in the marketplace for the millions of women who must work.
ERA will enhance the role of the wife by providing the retention of legal rights after marriage.
ERA will eliminate payment of inheritance tax by widows on jointly owned property and equalize benefits in social security and pensions.
ERA will create equal educational opportunities for boys and girls in publicly supported schools.
ERA will ensure that the "Good of the Child" be the primary criterion for awarding custody. (Alimony will continue to be awarded on the basis of the need.)
ERA will extend to men truly beneficial "protective labor laws" and will prohibit restrictive and discriminatory hiring practices for men and women.
ERA will strengthen the family unit by ensuring that the marriage may be a true partnership.
The Equal Rights Amendment is a symbol of our national committment to the pricniples of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happinessl; We are fortunate, our nation's 200th birthday, to have the means by which we may fufill America's promise of justice and freedom by providing a Constitutional guarantee of equality.
WORDING OF THE EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT
Section 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.
Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce by appropriate legislation, the provision of this article.
Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.
ERA will not destroy the family.
ERA will not deny the right to privacy
ERA will not dictate homosexual marriage laws
ERA will not affect the Supreme Court ruling on abortion.
ERA will not require women to earn a salary.
ERA will not interfere with a state's right to legislate.
Thirty-four of the needed thirty-eight states have ratified the Equal Rights Amendment. Florida must become one of the four states needed for ratification.
Your help is needed in the Ratification effort. You cna contact one of the NOW chapters listed on the back or a local affiliate of one of the supporting organizations.
The fall elections are important. There are PRO ERA candidates in all of the remaining state Senate races. (in 1975 the Florida Senate defeated the ERA by a 21-18 vote. As of September, 1976, the vote apepars to be 18 YES, 16 NO, with six Senate races to be decided. The Florida House of Represenatives ratified the ERA in 1975, but there is still the need to maintain that status.)
