THE LITANY
Leader: O God, even as we consider our future, we remember those of the past through whom you have spoken. We petition for the insight of their lives; that they, from the "great cloud of witnesses" of departed spirits, may stand beside us to encourage our Christian endeavors.
Right: Doctor and recorder of good news, Luke, the good physician, who found faith, hope and love in Jesus Christ: Stand beside us to encourage our faith, hope and love.
Center: Christian martyrs of old, Polycarp, Ignatius, Justin, who refused conformity to Caesar: Stand beside us to bolster our courage when we are tempted to compromises.
Left: Bridgegroom of poverty, who went about helping the poor, our brother Francis of Assisi, critic of affluence and friend of all creation: Stand beside us as we use our wealth for compassion.
Right: Obedient reformer, Martin Luther, faithful rebel of empty ritual: Stand beside us in the church-[renewal] struggles of today.
Center: Patron of nurses, Florence Nightingale, unconcerned over which of the sexes does heroic service: Stand beside women involved in service today.
Left: Apostle of non-violence, Mohandas Gandhi, reproach to modern practice and friend to the masses: Stand beside us in opposing war as a solution.
Right: Citizen of the world, Martin Luther King Jr., peacemaker, reconciler, dreamer of an America in which all persons are truly free. Stand beside us to inspire our hope and efforts for a nation that guarantees liberty and justice for all, and a world united in peace.
Center: Grant us Lord, the attitudes toward life and work and fellow human beings that we, like these, may seek not to be served, but to serve.
Unison: In the name and spirit of Jesus Christ. AMEN
