I take this means of voicing my objection to removing the trees from Calhoun Street. Tallahassee is noted for its homes, its hospitality, its beauty, its traditions, its schools and its cultured people. Its trees contribute materially to these assets and many of them it takes a generation to produce. It does not take wider streets or treeless streets to produce any of the things that Tallahassee is noted for and I think they are preferable to any substitute for them. Boston and Atlanta are two cities noted the country over for the fact that the old down-town streets are still narrow and run like cow trails that traversed the area before the streets. I might emphasize my position with scores of illustrations like these but the point is that I think Tallahassee should adhere to its long standing policy of placing the emphasis on its beauty, its cultured people, its traditions and its schools. I had rather have it modest size noted for these things than have it a big industrial town noted for the things that plague them but as pointed out above it does not require the destruction of its trees to make it either way.
