The role of the principals when resignations are activated was defined by the FEA Board at their October 8 meeting:
1. You have resigned and therefore have terminated your legal obligation. To fulfill your professional obligation, on the day resignations are activated you should:
a. Go to the building, make certain that adequate provision is made for the safety and welfare of the children who may show up at school.
b. Remain at school only as long as necessary to accomplish the above.
c. Provide for the security of the building.
d. If your secretarial staff is to remain on duty, give them the enclosed telephone message to read in response to inquiries.
e. Put the enclosed notice on the front door.
f. Leave the school and go to your area communication meeting.
2. The FEA will protect principals just as any other members.
3. While you have been asked to refrain from exerting pressure, this does not mean that you must refrain from making known your own decision to support the united action of profession.
I am enclosing a copy of the legal memorandum prepared by FEA Legal Counsel Bill Daniel regarding resignations. This opinion will be printed in the tabloid which will reach all teachers next week. Please study it and use it to help resolve any confusion that may arise among the faculty.
