Dear Miss Stephens:

I want to tell you and the six others imprisoned with you how we all admire the courage you have shown in the face of Tallahassee brutality. This is a letter to all of you: your sister Patricia, Miss Angeline Nance, Miss Barbara Broxton, John Broxton, and William Larkin. If I tried to write each of you, I might repeat myself. So please accept this as a congratulation to each one of you individually for your witness to the splendid vision of a world without race as well as your fearless espousal of non-violent non-cooperation as preached by [Gandhi] and so well by Rev. Martin Luther King and our own Rev. C. K. Steele.

Jail is not a nice place to be and the worst thing to bear, it used to seem to me, is the isolation from the outside world. Please let us know if you are allowed to write letters if we can help in any way. (I'd like to send you a dollar apiece right now, which I am sure you could use, but I'm afraid Chief Stoutamire might never allow it to reach you!)
