Dear Miss Stephens:

I have recently read of the courageous stand you have undertaken in the current demonstrations incident to the "sit-in" counter disputes in your and other communities. Permit me to take this opportunity to congratulate you on your participation in this movement - which, I feel, is deserving of the highest praise.

Southern Negro youths by thousands upon thousands have demonstrated non-violence - and with [superb] [discipline] and dignity - in spite of violent reactions from many local police and citizenry.

Do keep in mind the fact that your lines of defense are not only becoming increasingly recognized, but [reinforced]. South Africa, South Korea, French Algeria and other areas throughout the world of down [trodden] peoples are practically unanimously agreed that we can no longer sit complacently by and even pretend to accept second-class citizenship. And certainly, to my thinking, no youth movement anywhere has been conducted with more significance of purpose and dignity of spirit than that of you Negro students in our American South.

Keep up the good fight. Honest and courageous peoples everywhere are, one way or the other, appreciating you and your God-given right to your aims.
