TROPICAL LAKES AND MOSS
For you who have come down to Lakeland to play with us there are many joys awaiting you when you answer the call of playtime. Whether you seek the more vigorous physical exercises in golf, tennis, and other sports, or whether yours is the aesthetic enjoyment of nature, nowhere will you find such a paradise as in Lakeland and its county empire of Polk.
In the pages of this little booklet there will be found numerous places to visit, to enjoy -in which to "Re-Create." What Ponce de Leon and countless thousands of others have done it is your privilege to do -to roam about the lake-dotted country side until you find that eternal youth comes through the spirit of wanderlust that is within us all.
In taking you to the various points you will want to visit, we have chosen Munn Park as the point of departure and return. You may plan your "Little Journeys" from either a viewpoint of time or interest. A city map which may be secured from the Chamber of Commerce will help you to plot your route.
The City of Opportunity
In Lakeland you will find a keen interest
in sports of all kinds. A $125,000 appropriation is being spent on a new athletic field. The Cleveland Indians train in Lakeland each spring, and play several exhibition games with other big league teams. Lakeland also maintains a club in the Florida State League. In addition there are college and high school football games played on this field. A new concrete grandstand has just been erected which will house several hundred people in comfort.
Leaving Munn Park, you go North on Kentucky Avenue to North street; left for two blocks to Florida, and right on Florida until you reach the Athletic Field. Returning you may come directly south on Florida avenue to Main street, and thus to Munn Park, the tourist's recreation center.
Southern College, a co-educational in situation of higher learning is located on the shores of Lake Hollingsworth. Its campus is unique, being a sixty acre orange and grapefruit grove. It has the distinction of being the southernmost college in the United States.
Going South on Kentucky avenue. right at Lake Morton, and right on Success avenue, you will arrive at McDonald avenue, where a short run of five blocks to the
LAKE MORTON DRIVE
East will bring you to the campus. Two of the most modern and architecturally most beautiful buildings are already constructed, while the plans call for a much larger plant.
In returning, you may drive directly down Park Hill avenue, left at Palmetto street to Lake Morton and around either shore to Kentucky avenue, and back to Munn Park
CANOE RACES ON LAKE HOLLINGSWORTH
The Cleveland Heights County Club, situated on the southern shore of Lake Hollingsworth, is a beautiful spot that should not be overlooked. Going South on Kentucky to Lake Morton, and around the lake to Success avenue, you turn to the right passing through one of the most select residential sections of the city. Turn right again at Lake Hollingsworth and follow its shores to the Club House.
This building is done in Spanish style, and all interior work is attractively

finished. In returning you may continue on the Lake Hollingsworth drive until you come to Hollingsworth Road, and passing through Biltmore Park, you may return to Munn Park by the oakshaded Orange street passing the new City Hall and Auditorium.
The Crystal Lake Club House is another point of interest to visit. Going South on Florida avenue, and left at McDonald street, you will arrive at Lake Hollingsworth. Turning left at the Bartow road. take the left turn at the filling station, and continue to the Club House. Here you may enjoy dancing, picnicing, or swimming in the clearest lake in Lakeland, where the water is 96 per cent pure. Returning, you may drive through Sevilla-on-the-Lake, around Lake Bonny, entering Lakeland by the Dixie Highway, East Morton street and Lake Mirror.
STUDENT'S PLAYTIME
ON THE LAKELAND GOLF COURSE
The Lakeland Golf and Country Club on Lake Parker is a spot you should not miss. Going out by Lake Mirror, East Morton street and the Dixie Highway, you will see Lake Bonny on the right and Shore Acres, fronting Lake Parker, on the left. Turn right and enter Shore Acres to the lake, thence left down the drive to the club house. Here you may enjoy golf, dancing or swimming, and there are also facilities for yachting and motor boating.
A tour of all the Club Houses may be made by combining the directions given in the individual tours. After leaving the Cleveland Heights Club, you turn right at the Bartow Road and arrive at the Crystal lake Club House. You may continue through Howenoca Hills to the Dixie highway, and thus to the Lakeland Golf and Country Club.
There are several wayside inns that dot the countryside around Lakeland, where one may go for an appetizing dinner, or a dance. Among these is the Groveland Inn at Haskell. You may reach this Inn by following the directions for the Bartow Road, and continuing on this road for about five miles.
A subdivision tour of the city will show you what development is going on, besides giving you a chance to see the many styles of architecture employed in the building of the city's most beautiful homes. Going South on Florida avenue turn left at Ariana Drive, and pass through Horneyhurst Drive. Turn left to Lakeview, driving through Alta Vista. Arriving at Florida avenue, turn left to Kenilworth Court, and coast down the hill to Hollingsworth Drive. One block, and your turn right up Moringside Drive, and back up to Florida avenue. Go south on Florida to Edgewood, and through Horney;s First Addition.
On either side of Florida avenue are beautiful subdivisions, Beacon Hill, Oakedale, Palmorely, and you turn left on a paved road that takes you around the

Cleveland Heights subdivision. Arriving at the Bartow Road, turn left, passing Fourteen Points, Lochleven, and Belvedere. Turn right at Lake Hollingsworth, passing Hollingsworth Terrace, and right at Hollingsworth Road, to the left at McDonald, passing Olympia Park south of the Southern College Campus. Right at Ingraham, and left at Palmetto street, seeing Biltmore Park as you turn. You may return to the city by Lake Morton, and any of the avenues that lead to Main street.
The lakes for which Lakeland is named are worth a tour in themselves. Wide boulevards surround most of these, and stately swans float on their surfaces. It would be difficult to arrange a tour to see them all, but you can, in a short time see over half of them.
Going North on Florida avenue to Pine street left on Pine Street and you arrive at Lake Weir. Circling the Lake, you may arrive once more on Main street, and go West to Central avenue and Lake Hunter. Around Lake Hunter to Park street, to Lake Hollingsworth Drive to the Bartow Road. Taking the left forks at the filling station, you will arrive at Crystal Lake.
PICKING ORANGES NEAR LAKELAND
Come back on the same road to Sevilla-on-the-Lake, and around Lake Bonny and Little Lake Bonny to the Dixie Highway, where you turn left, passing Lake Parker on right. You may return to Lakeland by East Morton Street and Lake Mirror.
If you want to see Florida's rolling hills miles upon miles of orange groves stretching away in the horizon don't fail to take the Highlands trip. Going south on Florida avenue, about three miles will bring you to a fork in the roads where you turn left. Rolling hills and banked curves will bring you to the Highlands Country Club. Stop your car and look at the beautiful panorama, with Lakeland's skyline miles away in the blue haze. Nowhere in Florida will you see a sight like this. Lake Seward and Banana Lake may be visited on this trip. You may continue on the same road until you reach Haskell, and enter Lakeland from Bartow Road and Lake Hollingsworth.
Swimming the Year 'Round
Bathing may be enjoyed in almost every lake in Lakeland. but, besides the pavilions and beaches in the city, there are numerous lakes and pavilions within a short distance which are visited the year 'round by dancers, swimmers, boaters and picnickers.
THE RESTFULNESS OF QUIET NOOKS
Mac's Beach, on Lake Ariana, one of the largest and most beautiful lakes in the region, is only nine miles away by the Dixie highway. Leaving the city by Lake Mirror, East Morton street, a short twenty minutes ride will take you to your destination. The road leads through some of Florida's virgin woods of pine and cypress, and occasionally you will see people fishing for perch from the bridges that span several small streams on the route.
Eagle Lake is reached by taking the Bartow Road at Lake Hollingsworth. When almost a mile from Bartow take the left forks at a filling station, and continue to your destination. One of the features of this pavilion is its good dancing. If you go in swimming, you may enjoy a slide like a "roller-coaster," which rapidly conveys you to the cool waters of the lake. In returning, come by Auburndale and Lake Ariana, the Dixie Highway and Lake Mirror.
Kissengen Springs, reached by the road passing through Bartow, and situated about nineteen miles from Lakeland, is an ideal place for picnicing or swimming. It is reminiscent of the "ole swimming hole." Rings and facilities for high diving make these springs distinctive. The water boils

up interminably, and has a continual overflow, keeping these springs clean, and providing a novel place in which to dive.
Sulphur Springs, Tampa's "watering place" is accessible in an hour's ride from Lakeland. It is on the Tampa Highway, and may be reached by leaving Lakeland by West Main street, and passing through Plant City. Sulphur Springs is a Coney Island in miniature, and parties often go from here to picnic or dance.
With Rod and Reel
To the disciple of Sir Izaak Walton this county is indeed a paradise. The fifteen lakes within the city are full of perch, bass, trout, bream, and many other kinds of game fish. Scott and Banana lakes, which may be reached via the Highlands tour are quiet places to spend a few hours matching withs with the finny kings of the water. At Lake Seward, reached in the same manner, there is a giant oak with a branch that extends 110 feet, an object of attraction to all the countryside. The three lakes are located in the heart of the highlands amid orange and grapefruit groves.
Trips lasting several days are often organized to the Kissimmee river, Polk County's eastern boundary. Some of the
CHAMPION "SLIPPER-SLINGERS"
largest freshwater fish in the state are caught here, and you may have the added joy of an outing in the woods.
Salt water fishing is easily available after a short trip to the Gulf. Tampa, Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Tarpon, and other cities on the West Coast offer all kinds of game fish, such as Tarpon, Barracuda, King Fish, etc. Launches and guides may be obtained at these places at a reasonable rate.
If you desire further information about fishing, there is in Lakeland and Issac Walton League which will gladly give you all the information you may need.
Industrial Trips
A city is largely dependent on its industries. If you are interested in seeing some of Lakeland's industries, you may drive out West Main street, passing by the Lakeland Manufacturing Co., and the Non-Acid Fertilizer Co.
If you want to see phosphate mining, a trip to Mulberry and the surrounding territory is recommended. Going out South Florida avenue, you take the left fork about three miles from the city, and continue to Mulberry, passing several phosphate pits, cranes, and mills. You have here a chance
TENNIS ON THE SOUTHERN COLLEGE COURTS
to see the entire industry at first hand. It will be interesting to know that Polk County mines forty-five percent of the world's phosphate. You may return to Lakeland by Bartow and Lake Hollingsworth.
It is not necessary to leave the city limits to see some of the citrus packing houses at work. However, there is a big plant at Haskell, out on the Bartow Road, that will repay the visitor's interest in this industry.
Scenic Loops
One of the most enjoyable features in Lakeland is that in answering the call of the open road it is possible to go over a number of "loops" that range from twenty to a hundred miles in which you may have the opportunity of seeing different kinds of Florida scenery without again travelling the same road.
YOU MAY ENJOY BOWLING-ON-THE-GREEN
A ROCQUE COURT IN MUNN PARK
Mostly within the city itself is the Lake Parker Loop. Going out by the Lake Mirror, East Morton street and the Dixie Highway, you turn left at Cumbee Road continuing to Jungle avenue. One block and a a new Spanish designed filling station left on Jungle avenue and you are on Lake Parker Drive, where you turn to the right. This loop is especially pretty at night. The road winds around the lake and returns to Lakeland by lake Gibson, and the spot selected for the National Carpenters' and Joiners, Home. You enter Lakeland by North Florida avenue. Distance 24 miles.
The Kathleen Loop is another drive of beauty. Going North on Florida Avenue turn left on Pine Street, right around Lake Weir Drive. right again at Lincoln Avenue, right on North Street, left on Omohundro Avenue, and left on to the Kathleen Road.

TEA, UNDER MOSS-HUNG PINES
One of the prettiest small lakes in the county is on this road, distinctively by reason of the lily pads that float in the surface. You return to the city by North Florida avenue. Distance 25 miles.
Another loop of scenic beauty is by Bartow, Winter Haven and Auburndale. Tropical foliage and other semi-tropic scenes in the fast disappearing swamps of Florida, as well as gnarled and ancient cypress trees seen on this trip mark it as distinctive. Distance 35 miles.
To St. Petersburg and return over the famous Gandy bridge is a trip that should not be be overlooked. Leaving the city by West main street you arrive in Tampa, and cross the Gandy Bridge to this famous winter resort. Returning you may come by Clearwater and the attractive Bay Shore Boulevard section of Tampa. A glance at the little map will show you the best route. Distance 138 miles.
The highest section of Polk County and Florida as well is on the Highland Park and Mountain Lake tour or loop. It is here that such world-wide celebrities as Roger Babson, Edward W. Bok, Cyrus H.K. Curtis make their residence, and the development of the natural beauty of this

country into parks and club houses is very interesting. You will have a chance to observe almost all kinds of Florida scenery, from the cypress-covered swamps to the rolling hill country, for which this country is famous. You cannot enter Mountain lake or Highland Park on Sunday, but you visit them during the week.
We cannot, of course, in such limited space, list all of the points that would really take you months to visit, but we have endeavored to lead you through some of the beauties of this land of sunshine and flowers. If you will call at the Chamber of Commerce we will be glad to give you any further information that is within our power. Do not fail to request maps, booklets, or anything that will help make your stay with us more pleasant.
