Census Taker's Remarks

No particular malady prevailed during the year. The character of the water is pure and healthy. The general feature of the soil is a sandy loam; at the seacoast and the adjoining islands it is richly interspersed with decayed seashells, which gives it a particular rich character. The timber growing in this county are yellow, or pitch, pine, live oak and cedar. With proper management an inexhaustible mine of natural fertilizers could be opened by using the rich deposits accumulated by nature for centuries past in the marshes and low swamplands. The soil is remarkably well adapted for the culture of cotton and sugarcane. The sour orange grows promiscuously in its natural state, and the sweet, or China, orange is cultivated with success. Should the insects, which for several years past have made great havoc in the orange orchards, be subdued, either by a natural or artificial process, there is no doubt that this section of the peninsula of Florida will in a few years bloom like a garden, and successfully compete with the West Indian islands in the production of the orange.
