Census Taker's Remarks

The prevailing diseases or those of most frequent occurence may be classed as follows: bilious, remittent, intermittent, and dysenteric affections, which diseases are characterized by no particular malignancy or extremity of type. High bilious remittent or yellow fever has invaded this community [Key West] at particular period, confining itself principally to those who rank as unacclimated, viz: strangers and children. The accession and prognosis of the disease has presented a favorable modification to that of other and neighboring communities in which it has prevailed. Catarrhal affections during the winter season or following the sudden changes of summer are also of frequent occurence. The face of the country presents few irregularities of surface, the highest elevation being 13 feet above the level of the sea. The soil is composed of decayed vegetable matter, averaging in depth from 2 to 2 1/2 feet, combined in many parts where most superficial with pulverized lime derived from the coral or secondary lime-rock forming the natural basis of the island. The water at present used is rain or cistern water, for the reception of which there are numerous reservoirs, every building nearly being supplied with cisterns. The quality of the "well water" previously employed [...] adapted to culinary purposes, being objectionable from the saline properties derived by its vicinity to the ocean. This has with few exceptions been long abandoned. Vegetation is of comparatively small growth, the pine and oak being absent. The natural growth of trees as they are here named are gum-elmic, gum-mastic, yellow-wood, iron-wood, dog-wood, white-wood, banyan or wild fig, buttonwood, boe-wood, mangrove, &c. Many others of recent introduction now flourish here. Of fruit trees, the cocoa-nut, tamarind, banana, lemon, lime, guava, and various others of a tropical character have been successfully introduced. The grape termed Isabella is also at present extensively cultivated and forms a prominent article of local traffic among the natives. In many of the gardens or small farms established, sufficient vegetables are raised during farmable seasons to supply the wants of the citizens, and suffice [to] remunerate such as [to] direct their attention to this source of trade.
