Dear Governor Sholtz: Ex-Governor Doyle Carlton was here sometime ago. He told me of your deep interest in the proposed Everglades National Park. There are many problems in this project which will need your leadership. The [most] important of which is the study of land acquisition. I am hopeful that under the auspices of the State of Florida much of this land owned by private groups can be acquired by gift. My work here has been chiefly on the legislation in Congress as Mrs. Owen may have told you. We have been up against a very tough situation. The disturbed conditions in Congress are such that they may prevent us from succeeding with the Bill in the House in the Short Session. However, I am counting on Mrs. Owen's driving ability. Our opposition comes from Representatives who believe that this project is going to cost a lot of money. We believe it may be ten years before the Federal Government will be called upon to spend much money on the Park. Our experience on the acquisition of land under similar conditions such as the Great Smokies, is that it requires a long time to clear up these land problems as well as to do the financing. Our Association is doing everything in its power to help the passing of the Bill in the Short Session. With your permission we shall keep you in touch with our activities.
