Testimony of Minnie Lee Langley. She was living in Rosewood with her grandmother, Emma Carrier, at the time of the massacre. She describes the community of Rosewood as a middle-class, Black town. She recalls that after the lynching of Sam Carter, other members of the Carrier extended family, predominantly women and children, gathered at the Carrier's home for protection.Langley describes how on the night on January 4, 1923 she was upstairs with her siblings and cousins when a mob of white men outside fired their weapons on the home. Langley says she saw her aunt, Sarah Carrier, lying on the bed after being shot through a window. When Langley went downstairs, her uncle, Sylvester Carrier, grabbed her and hid beneath the stairs. Langley describes Poly Wilkerson kicking down the door and her uncle shooting him along with Henry Andrews who entered the home right after Wilkerson. Langley says she escaped into the woods near Wylly with the other children and a few young women and stayed there for several days. Langley also says that the Bryce brothers, conductors on the Seaboard Atlantic train line, worked with the local store owner John Wright to secure the women and children of Rosewood safe passage via train to Gainesville. Langley says she never came forward with her story until the 1980s because she was afraid of retaliation from members of the mob that had attacked Rosewood.
