General Note
Bowers' apprentice, Martha Jones (left), who is also from Brighton, helped her grandmother make a few baskets in the 1950s, but did not learn the full process when she was young. She wants to become an accomplished basketmaker so she can teach her daughter, grandchildren, and other Seminoles this endangered traditional craft.
Marion Bowers (right), who lives on the Seminoles' Brighton Reservation, learned to make palmetto stem baskets from her mother more than sixty years ago. The baskets are an older style than the coiled baskets that are usually made by Seminoles today. Bowers is one of the few Seminoles who maintains this vanishing art form.
