General Note
Pysanky is done with a meticulous wax resist techinique in which a tool called a kystka applies melted beeswax to the egg, and a series of dye baths results in an elaborate, detailed design. The designs incorporate a variety of symbolic elements. For example, a ribbon or belt around the egg means eternity; a rooster, as the messenger of light, is a symbol of Christ; and a butterfly symbolizes resurrection.
She was mentor to Mary Martin of Titusville.
Ola Kryway of Titusville decorates Easter eggs using the centuries-old Ukrainian method known as pysanky. She has been practicing the craft for over sixty years.
