Born on October 4, 1792 in Pittsfield, Virginia he married Mary Letitia Kirkman in General Andrew Jackson's home, the Hermitage in 1824. Served as Territorial Governor of Florida 1836-1839 & 1841-1844. He died on September 14, 1862 at his Tallahassee home "The Grove". 3rd and 5th Governor. Served: 1836-1939, 1841-1844.
