Bartholf was a Union officer commanding an all-black troop in South Florida during the Civil War. He fought at the Battles of Fredericksburg (Virginia) and Gettysburg (Pennsylvania). Bartholf became a key leader in the post-war Republican Party of Manatee County. He was referred to as the Father of Education for the Peace River Valley.
