The Lewis is thought to be the first steamer on the Manatee River. It was built at "Bat" Forgarty's boatyard in Fogartyville. It was 100' long, and 25' wide. The hull was launched and towed to the Merrill-Stevens Shipbuilding Company in Jacksonville, where the engine and boiler were installed.
Biographical Note
The Lewis was used as a supply boat for the Tallevast Turpentine Camp at Mitchelville (head of the navigation of the Manatee River), brought down turpentine and rosen to Bradenton. The Lewis was layed up in 1907 or 1908 at Ft. Hamer. It caught on fire one night and sank.
