John Jasper Simmons, pictured here in an ambrotype with an unidentified soldier (it is unknown which of the soldiers is Simmons), was sixteen years old when he enlisted in Captain Angus D. McLeangass Company H of the 6th Florida Infantry at Mount Vernon Arsenal in April 1862. He was on sick furlough shortly after his enlistment but was able to return to his regiment in time for its advance into Kentucky with General Kirby Smith. John Simmons was left sick in a Frankfort, Kentucky hospital on October 1, 1862 and died there a few days later.
