"Oh, mother, how lovely! But how are you going to invite the
butterflies?"
"You'll find out deer, just hurry."
When Peggy Ann reached the golden shower tree she was
surprised to find on her little table a dish of soft squashy over-ripe
banana, and a teaspoonful of melted brown sugar.
"Now," said her mother, "sit very still and see if a butterfly
comes to our party."
Soon, from the top of the tree, a large butterfly, like a brown and
golden fairy, floated gently downward. Several times the creature
almost stopped in mid-air, then would flutter upward again, but all the
time it drew nearer to the table. At last, deciding the feast must be for
her, she alighted, put forth her long pumping tongue and sucked up the
juice of the fruit. The butterfly repeated this many times and finally flew
away into the sunshine and was lost to view.
Peggy Ann was so excited she could hardly speak. Never before
had she seen such a large butterfly so close and she was anxious to know
more about the little guest.
