General Note
President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law on July 2, 1964. Former Florida Governor LeRoy Collins took part in the ceremonies held in Washington, D.C. Johnson selected Collins to serve as the Director of the Community Relations Service (CRS), an organization created by the Civil Rights Act of 1964. As part of his duties, Collins traveled to communities across the U.S. to mediate tensions resulting from disputes over civil rights. One of the most successful examples of CRS work under Collins' leadership occurred during voter registration demonstrations in Selma, Alabama in the summer of 1965 (see film V-142).
