The Chiricahua Apaches, led by Geronimo, surrendered to the United States Army in 1886 and were transferred to Florida as prisoners of war. Chief Geronimo and sixteen other warriors were detained at Fort Pickens near Pensacola while the women, children, and some of the men were held at Fort Marion in St. Augustine. Most were eventually relocated to Mount Vernon, Alabama in 1887 and 1888.
