General Note
Villa Vizcaya in Miami, former home of one of America's great industrialists, James Deering. Began operation in 1953 as the Dade County Art Museum with European decorative arts dating from 1450 to 1800. The great Italian house, opened in 1916, rises on Biscayne Bay and its broad yacht harbor is protected by an amazing stone boat. Vizcaya was later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark on April 19, 1994. The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens Trust was later formed to be the museum's governing body in 1998.
