Articles of agreement made and entered into this 15th day of January 1867 between M. Coleman and Asa May, of the first part, and the freedmen whose names are signed below, of the second part, witnesseth that the said freedmen of the second part agree and bind themselves to labor faithfully back on the plantation belonging to Asa May, known as the “Cole Place” at the following rates, viz: $12.50, twelve dollars and fifty cents, per month until the end of the present year. They are also to receive 4 pounds of bacon and a peck of meal to the hand per week. The money to be paid at the end of the year, when a final settlement must be made between the contracting parties.The party of the second part bind themselves to good work and to do any and all kinds of work on the plantation that the party of the first part may require. And, for all time lost, the party of the first part may deduct a proportionate amount as the wages received
