The Andrew D. Gwynne Institute opened for classes on October 20, 1911 in Fort Myers, replacing the former Lee County High School. It was named for Colonel Andrew D. Gwynne, a wealthy cotton broker and wholesale grocer from Memphis, Tennessee who had a winter residence in Fort Myers. The Gwynne family donated $8,000 toward the school. In 1914, another high school was constructed and the Gwynne Institute building became an elementary school.
