This collection consists of digital copies (produced by the Archives) of 42 16th-century engraved illustrations by Theodore de Bry. The engravings are from the second volume in de Bry's series Grands Voyages chronicling the European exploration of the Americas. The second volume, "Der ander Theil, der newlich erfundenen Landschafft Americae, von dreyen Schiffahrten, so die Frantzosen in Floridam" (1591), was an account of the French attempt to establish a settlement in Florida and their experiences with the Timucua. De Bry's engraved illustrations are the earliest European images of Florida. A Flemish engraver, bookseller and publisher, de Bry produced the copper engravings with the help of his sons Jan Theodor and Jan Israel. As none of them had ever been to Florida, they were guided in their efforts by watercolors created by Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues (c. 1533-1588), a French artist and mapmaker who was a member of the 1564 Laudonnière expedition.

At a certain time of year the Indians collect all kinds of game, fish and even crocodiles. Baskets are filled with these creatures and put on the shoulders of curly-haired hermaphrodites whom we have already described. All this is taken to storehouses where it is not touched except in cases of extreme need, when, to avoid disputes, the Indians come to an agreement among themselves, which illustrates the harmony that exists among them. However, the king is at liberty to take what he chooses.
