AN OPEN LETTER TO THE PEOPLE OF FLORIDA
from Lawton Chiles & Buddy MacKay
Florida is America's most vibrant, fastest growing state- confronted by a broad range of challenges. During this decade of the '90s, our response to those challenges will determine whether we are the kind of state in which we want our children and grandchildren to grow and propser.
Some might view the challenges before us as insurmountable onstacles. We chose to see them as grand opporunities- to work with the people and to build a better quality of life for all Floridians.
First, we will be challenged to bring a dedicated sense of purpose and urgency to the fiscal crisis in which Florida is mired. There can be no real progess until we dispense the clouds over Florida's economic horizon.
The time has come to bring peace back to our neighborhoods- and to make Florida safe for families again.
Providing our children with the education they deserve begins with promoting more local control and accountaibility. We'll work to make every public school a multi-purpose neighborhood center.
Offering dignity and respect, we'll take care to meet the special needs of Florida's elderly. We won't be a state of neglect.
Protecting our environment from the pressure of growth is everyone's business. We'll serve as stewards entrusted with saving, not squandering, a precious natural inheritance.
Restoring trust in Florida's government means making certain the public interest isn't lost in the shadows of special interest influence. In an atmospehre of reform, we can return government to the people.
Florida is a community- not a crowd. We are family- not strangers. We are united by hope for the future- nto torn by fear from the past.
We believe in the genuine goodness of our neighbors. We are inspired by the everyday wisdom of our people. And, we are motivated by the boundless spirit of our fellow Floridians.
These are our challenges- and our opportunities. This is our moment- to affirm our need to care for each other. This is our time- to share concern, to be involved and to make a difference for Florida's future.

CELEBRATING FLORIDA'S PEOPLE
In his successful 1970 campaing for a seat in the United States Senate, Lawton Chiles reach out to the people of Florida during an historic, unprecedented campaign. He walked from Century, in the northwest corner of the Panhandle, to the unique Florida Keys. The people responded to that symbolic gesture of the Chiles commitment to represent their interests- and they voted him into office.
To this day, the foundation of the Chiles approach to government is "The Walk" and its lasting lesson- that people are Florida's most precious natural resource. With a $100.00 limitation on contributions, the 1990 Chiles/MacKay campaing demonstrated the power of the people. More than 75,000 people contributed- many of them getting involved for the first time.
More than its pristine coastline or its abundant natural wonders, Florida's real richness lies in the diversity of its human capital. The theme- "This Time, The People Win"- was a natural reflection of the beleif that governemtn exists to serve the needs and interests of the people.
A new era begins with the Florida Jubilee- a true celebration of Florida and its People.
