The Cummer Galler of Art was opened on November 11, 1961. It was built and is mantained by the DeEtte Holden Cummer Museum Foundation, created through the bequest of Mrs. Ninah M.H. Cummer, long-time resident and art collector, who died in 1958. It was Mrs. Cummer's intention that the Foundation be operated "for educational and cultural purposes for the benegit of all the people of the City of Jacksonville, Florida."
Works of art from the original Cummer bequest formed the nucleus of the collection which has grown to include over 2000 objects ranging from the 5th century B.C. to the present. painting, sculpture, graphics, furniture and the decorative arts are included in the Cummer Gallery collection. Gifts and Membership Acquisitions have augmented the original bequest while special original and traveling exhibitons offer an opportunity for viewing an even greater range of art forms.
Established for educational purposes as well as for giving artistic pleasure, the museum offers lectures on art, guided tours, concerts, a library, original printed catalogues which explain the exhibits, and a sales desk where art books, original works of art, and related items may be purchased. With the exception of Membership activities and some Council projects, all events at the Gallery are offered free to the public.
