John G. Gamble, of Tallahassee, Florida, was a noted banker, gentlemen farmer, and promoter. He helped found the Union Bank of Florida -- which later failed, ruining him and many others financially. He sent his son, Robert, ahead to Ellenton, Florida, on the Manatee River, where they built what was considered the finest mansion in south Florida. (It later became a state historic memorial.)
