The incorporation and naming of Rollins College took place in Sanford, April 28, 1885.
The first graded school in Sanford was established in 1874 by Judge Tucker and his son, Howard Tucker. Classes were conducted by Mrs. Thomas Tucker with Miss [A]lice McRae added to the staff a few months later.
The First Methodist Church of Sanford was built on Sanford Avenue in the year of 1875 but it was later moved to Park Avenue and Fifth Street into larger quarters. It was about this time that the Roman Catholic Church was built here.
Zachary Taylor who laid out Mellonville Avenue in 1838 later became President of the United States.
The first passenger steamboat plying on the upper St Johns River between Fort Mellon and Palatka was "The Hancock", owned by Dr. Algernon S. Speer who had removed with his family and slaves, to this district from Georgia in 1844.

History of Court Houses, Seminole County.
From 1913 until 1918 the building known as the "Old Welborn Block", Sanford, was used as a Court House. In December 1918, the county bought the Elk's Building and remodelled it for a Court House, which is still being used for this purpose.
