Dear Sister Merie -
The last we heard from you was that you were quite ill along with mother. There has been no word since telling of improvement or reverse. We are hoping this will find you very much improved also the rest of the sick. God grant it thiswise[sic].

Dear Sister Merie -
The last we heard from you was that you were quite ill along with mother. There has been no word since telling of improvement or reverse. We are hoping this will find you very much improved also the rest of the sick. God grant it thiswise[sic].
We were paid off yesterday so are sending you the allotment which is to be expended as you shall see fit. It is with some regrets [that] we send this because of its smallness. There are very good reasons for its [diminutive] size so it is very [inconvenient] to make it larger and keep within our [resources]. You see the
climate is much colder and we will soon need some winter clothes. An [opportunity] presented itself in the shape of a Pea Coat (regulation overcoat) whereby I could get one for $5 (the cost in the slop chest in $18.) and as the regulations call for one I bought it. Then the taxes cost me $7.55, an amount that I did not have so had to borrow. Then there's a few necessities which we will need for we are going on a [cruise] of an unknown length soon. We know nothing definite but there is no danger so no need to worry. If it were not for conditions at home I would enjoy this life very much.
I have made an allotment of $20 of this month pay (August) to be sent you
direct by the paymaster so if we are at the Banks or somewhere at sea, it will be sent you when due regardless of where I am. Of course we will send more but that is merely a [precaution].
There are a great many things of interest here in Boston that I am enjoying such as the old historic buildings and battle grounds. Wish you could see some of the pretty parks and flowers. Such is not to be however.
I have only a short time in which to get ready for liberty so will have to break this off soon but before doing so let me say that it is rather [disappointing]
when the mail is delivered, not to be among the ones who hear from home. Can you not write oftener?
Am sending $45 in this letter again let me say that I wish it was more. But this leaves us with only a few dollars between us. We cannot send more than we make.
Your Anxious Bro-
Al.
