May 22, '18 Somewhere at sea?
Dear Sister,-
The remittance I mentioned in my last letter is now on [its] way and should reach you before this one but in case the other letter does not reach you all information it contained regarding this matter will be found here. I had a check to the amount of $25 drawn in favor of mother but it could not reach its destination and was returned so I have arranged that it be made out to you. When it arrives you will acknowledge its [receipt] both to me and to the party who drew it. Now if you know that our allotments have gone thro[sic] you had better use this money yourself but if the folks are still behind [perhaps] you had better send it on to them. Now get this right. I do not wish to supply Dad with any more than he and mother really need because my faith in his methods of parting with money is somewhat over taxed. The allotments should provide for them nicely. If you have learned [whether] they are getting them, let me know and use this little bit any way you see fit. Call it a birthday present from Art and I.
We have had no letters from home for three months and are somewhat anxious to know how things are going down there. It is possible that we will have some word from them when we get in. I shall be very [disappointed] if we do not. Try to freshen them up a bit if you can because I don't seem to get replies.
Now a word about ourselves. Both well as usual and still going strong. Have nothing of importance to relate other than the weather which is quite agreeable - "calm and smooth" etc. Sorry I am not allowed to tell about some of the events of the cruise but [that's] part of the game and [I'll] see to it that the Dutchmen get nothing of value from me.
Write me about yourself and [don't] spare the paper for I am quite anxious to "get the drift" of the things back there. Give my best regards to "Black Rifel[sic]" and all the rest. Art and I both congratulate you on reaching another birthday[.]
Your [affectionate] Bro.
Al.
