Dear Miss Katzen:
We are in receipt of the communication expressing your views with respect to the situation which has arisen in certain cities of the southeastern section of the United States where eating facilities are not on an integrated basis.
Let me assure you that the F. W. Woolworth Co. had absolutely nothing to do with the establishment of this custom. It was in vogue many years before our stores were opened in the area in question. Our Company has always considered itself a guest of any community in which it is located. As such, we are expected to, and endeavor to be good neighbors and to abide by the local customs established by local people for the conduct of business in their town.
under the above policy, it naturally follows that we will always welcome the opportunity to cooperate in any serious local endeavor calculated to improve the cultural and business climate and race relations of the community.
