Dear Patricia [Stephens] and your fellow student prisoners
I wonder if you know how much admiration and sympathy you and others like you are winning here in the North – not only from CORE members like us, but from all sorts of white Northerners who until now, were only remotely concerned with segregation. With all the goodwill they may have latently had, so many of them just never gave much thought to the problem. Now, because of the student sit-ins, that is all different. People whose only civil act was a yearly or less than yearly note are signing – and circulating – boycott pledges, joining picket lines, sending money. It is suddenly very real to them. We are with you, and sooner or later we shall win. We are proud to do the little we can, and it's you and young people like you who have made us proud.
