Dear Miss [Stephens]:
We subscribe to the New Republic Magazine, and note in the latest issue that you are serving a 60 day jail sentence for insisting on the rights of free men in a free country. According to the article, you have company there in the persons of five other young people who have decided to help fill the jails in order to win equal rights. All honor to you for being unafraid to face the consequences of such a belief.
In writing to you, I am writing to all of you, and in thinking of you, I think also of the others. God Bless you all, and keep you filled with conviction and courage as you walk thru the valley of the shadow.
Thru the efforts of people such as you, the end of Jim Crow is coming at an [accelerated] pace. He will be buried, and set the rest of us all free to pass on to the problems of the 20th Century, without his 19th century visage leering us in the face.
