Dear Trish,
I hope all is well with you, and your sister. I realize that it wasn't any hayride for you these past weeks, but I hope that good will come from the suffering that you and many other students throughout the South have done. I think you are wrong when said that you were not sharing the burden the way you should, because you have done more than your share, [illegible, torn] have given people courage and hope. [illegible, torn] have done what people like myself couldn't or were afraid to do. You stood [illegible, torn] fought for what you thought was right. There should be more people like you , willing to sacrifice what you have sacrificed.
Please relax, at least a little before you start traveling all over the place. Go out on a few dates, and have a few laughs, after all you are so young to be finding such large problems on your shoulders, and if you don't laugh while you're young you will never be happy in life.
My luck was very good at the Penn. Relays, and I took first for a change, and also qualified for a chance
to make the U.S. Olympic team.
I have sent you a few pictures (which appeared in a campus publication) of students in the Campus U.N. If I ever get a picture of the [whole] general assembly I will send it to you.
I didn't send a picture of myself because I would probably scare you out of your skin, and besides I don't want to clutter up your scrapbook.
I am sorry I [illegible, torn] able to write the rest of the students, but I had to raise a lot of [illegible, torn] about Karl Chessman, which [illegible, torn] up [practically] all my time this past [illegible, torn]. I'll never forget what this country did to that poor guy. Things like that make me wonder if God is really real.
I play the banjo, and the piano (you see I love to sing folk songs), but a girl who plays the trumpet, that I don't know about. My favorite trumpeters are Miles Davis, Harry James, Art Ferguson, and Louis Armstrong, they can really play.
