At one time he was the acting master of fleet in Admiral Farragut navy serving on the Pensacola and the Tahoma. He resigned from the navy to command the 2nd Florida U.S. Cavalry. He was mustered out in Tallahassee which became his home. He served as Florida's Lieutenant governor in 1870 and as a member of the legislature representing Leon County in 1877 and 1885. He was also the sheriff of Leon County in 1890 and Marshall of the Northern District of Florida under President Harrison.
