Mortality schedule for the United States Census of 1850 for Benton County documenting persons who died during the year ending June 1, 1850.

Census Taker's Remarks

Benton County is usually considered remarkably healthy, yet it is subject to slight malarial diseases. It possesses much rich hammock lands, in which are vast quantities of quercus alba, quercus virens, juniperus virginiana, & the citrus aurantium or sour orange. Also a carbonate of lime resembling white marble; and a black loam, that of compact bitumen, which acquires great induration by moderate heat. The most of the farmers are squatters on the Public Lands and consequently cannot [the rest of the text is cut off]

Examples include dropsy of the belly (ascites), the brain (hydrocephalus), the chest (hydrothorax), or the skin (anasarca) (Hooper, Lexicon Medicum, 1860).

The disease was sometimes confused with shingles. Some cases were very mild and only caused localized symptoms and discomfort, but the condition could quickly turn more serious in the absence of modern antibiotics (Hooper, Lexicon Medicum, 1860).
