Census Taker's Remarks

Alachua County is free from those diseases which are frequently prevalent in our cities and seaport towns. The water is good and easily obtained, except in the vicinity of sink holes, where it is necessary to dig from thirty to sixty feet. The soil of the hammock lands are good and some of the pine lands are productive. The greater portion of the pine lands are valueless except for timber. Pine is the principle [sic] growth, except in the hammocks, where a variety of hard timber abounds. In this county there is a number of small praries, nearly all of which have a sink hole. The largest of these is Paines Prairie [rest of the text is cut off]
