General Note

The Miami Business and Professional Women’s Club was organized as the Miami Business Women’s League in February 1916 with Marjory Stoneman Douglas as one of its founding members and the club’s first president. There were about 25 women at the first meeting. The league was renamed the Miami Business and Professional Women’s Club in 1919 when the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs was formed. The Miami Business and Professional Women’s Club opened its own cafeteria and a facility to provide services to working women; helped provide scholarships to young women; and supported legislation focused on women, including the Married Women’s Separate Property Act in 1943 and the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s.
