The Oldest City in the United States
Beauty and culture, romance and drama, war and fire, are the backgrounds of the Ancient City of Saint Augustine. Ever since the days that Ponce de Leon landed here in search of the Fountain of Youth in 1513 these tropical shores have been alive with a stirring series of dramatic events. Founded in 1565 by the eminent Spanish Admiral Pedro Menendez de Aviles, Saint Augustine is the oldest permanent white settlement in the United States. It served under four flags and experienced many exciting events in these years. In the late nineteenth century Henry M. Flagler popularized what already was Florida's first winter resort. Today Saint Augustine is a favorite popular year-round resort with a mean average temperature of 69.9 degrees. The old Spanish atmosphere still predominates. That is why Americans and the rest of the world delight in visiting and making their homes in the Ancient City. Yet it is modernized enough to give its people the pleasures and conveniences of the twentieth century.
