Description

Correspondence between F. L. Middleton, C. S. Donaldson, and Governor Doyle E. Carlton regarding failed banks in Florida. Middleton urges the governor to arrange a meeting of all the presidents of Florida's failed banks or the mayors of the areas affected to appeal to the United States President for relief. Middleton believes a plan could be devised to enable every closed bank to reopen under the control of the Treasury Department or Federal Reserve Board and recommends seeking assistance from the Farm Relief Board. Donaldson claims the policies of the U.S. Treasury Department are responsible for the failures of the First National Bank and most other failed banks in the state rather than the collapse of Florida's land boom. Donaldson also acknowledges three years of failing citrus crops in Florida as a significant factor in Florida's economic downturn.
