Accused of a 1961 burglary but later not provided a lawyer for his trial. Judge Robert McCrary Jr. said that the State of Florida laws only allow provision of counsel for capital offenses. Mr. Gideon petitioned to the U.S. Supreme Court and after two years of imprisonment he received a new trial with court-appointed lawyer Fred Turner. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty.
