Biographical Note
Mary McLeod Bethune was the daughter of slave parents, Samuel and Patsy McLeod. Born in a three room log cabin on a cotton and rice farm about 3 miles from Mayesville, South Carolina on July 10, 1875,one of 17 children. Educated in Presbyterian mission school at Mayesville; Scotia Seminary, Concord, North Carolina and Moody Bible Training School in Chicago, Illinois. Founded the Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School October 3, 1904, an institute for training girls (Later became Bethune-Cookman College).
