Ms. DeAnne Watson’s 3rd Grade Class

“The Then and Now Project has been a very rewarding project for both my class and me. I teach third grade at Cedar Key School (CKS), which is located on a small island in the Gulf of Mexico. Cedar Key's only school, it has one teacher for each grade, with a total of 265 students.

I also attended this school, and some of my present colleagues were once my teachers. I love teaching at CKS, but this year was particularly special to me because my daughter Jade was in my class.

While trying to decide which photo to use for the Then and Now project, I found a CKS class photo from when I was in the third grade. For the Now photo, we chose to recreate that class photo. My daughter Jade stands where I stood in my third grade picture. Another student, Ryan, sits where his dad was, and Samantha is in the same place as was her aunt.

My students loved recreating this photo. They found it very interesting that we were able to take the picture on the same set of steps. I also enjoyed recreating the photo because I felt like the students could make many connections to history. What a great project!”

Sponge Divers

“My dad did sponging in Cedar Key, and I thought it might be interesting for you to hear.

One mask is big and heavy and the other one is just goggles and an air tank thingy.”

House

“It is one of my favorite houses around town. It is the same house. The older house is larger than the current house because a storm blew the top portion off.”

Three Girls in Front of Marsh Grass

“The "then" photo is a picture of Fileeta, Derene and Ivy. My grandmother found this old photo in my great-grandfather's pictures.

I thought that it would be neat for my sister and cousin to pose for the same photo.”
