Title
Early Drama in St. Augustine
Published Date
published 1940
When Florida was ceded to the Americans in 1819, the country
again went through a colonizing era which left no time for cultural pursuits.
By 1840, however, the play "The Honeymoon" was presented to a packed
house in St. Augustine. This was probably the first play to be given by
Americans on Florida soil.
The actors of this troupe probably never played a return engagement
as on their way to St. Augustine from Picolata they were attacked by
Indians and some of them killed. The warriors then took the various
costumes and put on an impromptu celebration of their own.
